The Columbus hidden from history

“Columbus in Chains,” Lorenzo Delleani, 1865

This is the Christopher Columbus the anti-maskers who fought to keep his statue in Chicago do not want you to see. Columbus was viceroy over his little kingdom (Haiti and the Dominican Republic – he never set foot on North America) for eight years before his atrocities and those of his brothers led to his return in chains to face trial in Spain. This is an 1865 painting by Lorenzo Delleani of the vanquished man who would be king over a people who never wanted him, who he murdered, raped, tortured, and mutilated. His reputation was only rehabilitated in the 20th century (fittingly, in the age of propaganda), and those efforts were led by the corrupt Tammany Hall in New York to advance their political agenda.
